I've been undertaking some serious learning curves trying new software, and trying new stuff, and mostly failing at trying new stuff. For example I spent a month trying to shoe horn comic pages into a html5 format so that when you click on the speech bubble it would activate a recording of the characters voice saying what's in the speech bubble. And it worked...kinda. I tend to want to get my books out there as soon as it's done, but often that may be chapter one of a three or four part story arc. Working this way often creates big gaps between parts of an arc, and often long waits for readers wanting the next instalment. So in a favour to my fans, and myself, I'm building a **buffer** so once I release the first chapter, at least half of the story has already been completed, so the rest of the chapters can be released in a timely fashion... Not only did he play *Ruroni Kenshin* in the live action films(bad ass), he also played the white blood cell in the *Cells at Work*(so bad ass). Lastly he plays the lead sa a paino playing genius in *Glass Heart*. I know what your thinking how can piano playing be bad ass? All I can tell you is this: I watched the opening scene and my interest was piqued. By episode 3 I was obsessed. The only thing stopping me from marathoning the whole thing was that I was watching it with my kids and they have to go to bed. It hit me in the feels - multiple times and I loved it. At the very worst skip to early in episode 8 to hear the best version of '*Time after Time'* you are ever likely to hear. In your life. If you like music you should enjoy it. The cultists love taking photos of other cultists whilst they are culting. The cult of course is **Parkrun**. The main idea seems to be walk/run/jog /enjoy 5 kilometres of beach side foot path while a whole bunch of 'randos constantly affirm you with stuff like: "you're doing great!", "good work!" or "keep going!" which really is quite benign as far as cults go. Of course I did attend one in Narrabri (North Western NSW) and that was not beachfront, more lake-ish front. Still the rando encouragement persisted. Allow me to now list the downsides of said cult (there are always downsides to being in a cult): 1. The event commences at 8am on a Saturday morning...this effectively puts the Kibosh on me having any sleep ins AT ALL every week. 2. If you are a 'stats' person, you can reflect on how your fare relative to other parkrunners in your age cohort/location/gender. The best I've done so far is being in the bottom 54% of males my age globally. Your mileage may vary. Upsides, are - well it is free - and possibly good for your health. In a feat almost entirely never acheived by any other band in living memory, once again they continue their untarnished track record of not ever releasing a crap song. From the screaming & drumming combo of drummer *Show Okuda* to the heavy emo rock vocals of lead singer *Yosh Morita* whispering a single word dramatically (in the songs *State of Mind* and *Adue*) its your standard recipe of SSTP delivering banger after banger after banger! 💡 Fun fact. I discovered SSTP as a spotify recommendation. The first track I ever heard was **Paradox*, which for some reason features again on this album. At any rate, as Molly Meldrum would have said, " do yourself a favour" and take a listen. Stand out tracks for me were *Adue, State of Mind, and X-Axis*. Check it out on the spotify or the youtubes. I also popped my head into the Canberra Geek Markets as they were also on and they were massive!!! I was short on time there, but went to great pains to get some quality books into Mal's hands. Mal operates [*Impact Comics*](https://impactcomics.com.au/?ref=tribetoons.com) in Canberra, and though it is some kind of two and a half hour commute to get there for me, it's still my LCS (Local Comic Shop). But it gets better, because all of the copies I gave to good old Mal also included a free sketch card - in a hard plastic sleeve!! Why you ask? Well I don't know if you have been keeping up with the implosion that is direct market comics, but your LCS is hard up against it at the moment, having to order from multiple distributors and suppliers, and potentially being owed money AND stock by Diamond Comics. What I'm saying is go to your LCS, or order online (for example [https://impactcomics.com.au/](https://impactcomics.com.au/?ref=tribetoons.com)) and spend a few bob on some sweet sequential entertainment. Or even better, launch yourself into the full colour world of ABT and get free swag! If there was ever a time to help, now is it. Never one to be all talk and no action, I picked up *Batman Year 100,* and the kids expanded their *My Hero Academia* and *One Punch Man* manga collections. Introducing...***Das Regen Vogel - The Rainbird*** > The story actually formed out of a wierd dream I had one night and just could not shake the idea so decided to run with it. *Rainbird* is also inspired by one of the most Bad-ass characters in any Dungeons and Dragons campaigns I've ever played - the mighty **Warbird**. **Warbird** was this barbarian bird man who literally swooped in and saved the day, smashing enemies with throwing axes akimbo! I must admit, *Rainbird* is pretty dark, (spoilers - the namesake is because whenever he turns up, it starts to rain blood). Anyway here's as far as I got. The first thing that came to mind is that the antagonist in this story has a nasty set of daggers that he wants to make some Brigand sushi (*sanzoku sushi* in the japanesse - thanks Google Translate!) out of. So of course, my mind instantly went back to one of my all time art hero's (and arguably one of the greatest Batman artists ever), *Kelley Jones* and hisiconic cover of Batman 493 see Exhibit C. Note the pro level of skill involved of drawing separate characters in differing colours in exhibit D, so that when I fire up the trusty old light box, its easy to see which of my own pictures I'm tracing. So, as per usual, the option I liked better was panned for the other version. In this case it was decided to go with Exhibit E. Turns out though, I have been a bit unwell the last few days and could not seem to muster maximal visual dynamism to work with that choice. Since it's celebrating and old school Brigand story, I went old school and inked the whole thing with a brush (and ink, obviously. Yes your honour, the term is called *inking*.) I mostly stopped brush inking because I found I could be more accurate with nibs/dip pens. Even spilled a couple of little drops of ink on the kitchen table. Don't worry they were cleaned up swiftly and the table is all good. I'm yet to hear if this version will be approved but it was a bit of fun getting to draw Zippy again (yes, your honour, the bad guy is called Zippy. Did I stutter,your honour?) It goes without saying there will be some digital cleaning up to get to the finished product (Yes, your honour, that means doing computer stuff). I remember ordering Big on *Saga #1* due to this radar of mine as an example. I recommended *FULL TILT*, by Jason Copland. I posted the link for the Zoop Campaign in the same post, and if you didn't back, well I got bad news for ya. You slept on *FULL TILT* and you missed out. This was one heck if a wild ride. The futuristic world is one of enhanced humans, Mafia turf wars, and of course, true love. At it's core, just like the Rocky franchise, *FULL TILT* is a love story wrapped up in something else. And that something else is a noir fulled twisting and turning beast that keeps you guessing right 'til the end. I emailed the author, Jason Copland and asked if folks slept on getting their hands on this book, what options did they have? "The ship has sailed, Dan", was his reply. And no, you can't have my copy. **Moral of the story, you better listen up when I make a recommendation!** --- It's not all bad news though, because the ship has just set out on *Dawn Runner* from Dark Horse Comics. I just peeped issue number one and boy oh boy is it pretty. I must admit that I bought the book purely based on Evan Cagle as the artist with no idea what the story was about. I have admired his work at [evancagle.com ](evancagle.com) for some time and just wanted to see more of it. I did not realize it was gonna be about giant mecha suits fighting Kaiju type beasts! Check it out here: --- **What's hitting now, brah?** Imagine if you will, discovering an amazing band years after they have actually stopped recording(I'm talking about *Search The City*). And then, to your dismay that they in fact only ever recorded 2 albums. Then continue to imagine, that to your surprise, when Spotify recommends tracks from a band that is arguably better, screamier, and has a back catalogue! This my friends was no journey of imagination, this was how I discovered ***Survive Said The Prophet***. Let's just say this has basically been the only thing on high rotation(and by that I mean almost exclusively beeing listened to) since October last year, and I'm pretty sure will be on high rotation for another 2 or 3 years - maybe even forever. The only playlist you will ever need. #### Proud Dad Moment #2 We spent the summer school holidays button mashing **Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4* on the PS4, which led to my girl's interest in the characters being piqued. They favoured the female characters like Sakura, Hinata etc. I explained to them they can find out all about them by reading the **Naruto* manga series. Colour me excited that just this very eve they have finished up reading all 72 volumes of the series since January this year. I love how comics can get kids reading, also I love that spending the years to obtain the full 72 volume set allowed this to happen. I'm not so sure if I busted out the ipad and said "Hey kids, check out this whole series on the internet..." it would have had the same impact... Dan ### Making comics the Tribetoons way - part 1 URL: https://www.tribetoons.com/quick-free-hacks/ Last updated: 2023-07-11T13:14:09.000Z I have recently been receiving queries about the process of making comics. Allow me to share my process for writing. I will highlight the rest of the process in future posts. ## The Plot Every story has a basic plot. Use this to rough out key components of the story you know will happen (or at this stage, appear to happen). It is basically a simple list. For example , Jurassic park could have started with something like this: - Dinosaurs cloned from DNA found in mosquito - Rich guys build real life dinosaur theme park - Visitors arrive - all is well. - Science guy has concerns about controlling nature - Sabotage occurs and control of the park is lost - Cool scene with T-Rex close encounter, dont forget the eating the guy on the toilet joke. - Race against time to save humanity from (previously) long dead lizard predators. This gives you a basic skeleton of story to work with. Obviously as things progress the order may change and things can be added and moved around. 💡 Pro tip: I do not recommend EVER deleting any story ideas in your working documents. Always keep them written down somewhere. Ideas are super portable, and something cool can be repurposed for another story somewhere down the track. Often better suiting something else. Cross it out, change the font colour, but don't delete it. If you delete it, that idea may never come back again and no one's memory is good enough to retain all their great ideas. ## The Script There are many ways to tackle this. Some people go super detailed describing each panel in detail, leaving the artist little room to move - Alan Moore was a classic for this type of script, also known as *'Full Script'*. At the other end of the spectrum, you have the *'Marvel Style'* (Stan Lee's favourite) where it is more like a Plot with dialogue and pages descriptions like 'Iron-Man fights Batroc for 6 pages'. Then once the pages have been drawn, Stan would go back to make the dialogue fit the pictures better. Personally, because most of the time I draw my own stories I'm somewhere in between. At the very least, I put in enough info so that if I'm asking for feedback about it the reader can figure out what is going on. I often write the script much like a play, using shorthand for character names. E.g. Brigand is always BR in a script, Cheeks is always Ch. The point is to figure out how to make each page move the story or character forward. This can start get highly technical as you may need to be aware of how the page turns work out so your big "I never seen this coming" moment isn't ruined because it is misplaced on the right hand page when you wanted that big reveal as you turned the page. The script can often be an ideal that you start with, but when the artist starts laying out the pictures as per the script it may not flow as well. Colloboration, go figure. Note the changes, and consider that there was only one person involved in this, and that was me. Stuff changes, we need to accept this in the creative life! --- 4 PAGE ABT SHORT working title"Strangest Metal" PAGE 1 Panel 1: Establishing shot, takes up half the page.The old mole (Hammerly) and young (kawaii!!) apprentice (TINKER) in a vey dimly lit and dusty over stacked library. Apprrentice: Master Hammerley it says here impervium really exists. I've always thought it a myth. Panel 2: H eyes lighting up H: Ah, yes, the"STRANGEST METAL" Impervium. (Alternatively the opening panel could be silent with the apprentice opening/grabbing the book calleed STRANGE METAL) Panel 3:H getting all nostalgic. H: "Rare it is, young Tinker. And no easy thing to forge." Panel 4: "ah, but priceles too." PAGE 2: Series of small panels one sentence per panel H still talking in theses panels. Pa 1: "Feather light." Probs a massive sword and little molvare wielding it with ease. Pa 2: "Unbreakable." Hammer hitting obvious impervium shield and shattering. Pa 3: "Impenetrable." Breastplate/mail with arrows disintegrating/getting squashed on impact. Pa 4: (H with cazy eyes) "Riddled with magic". I also continue my trademark of getting one of the characters to speak the name of the story as part of the dialogue. This started all the way back in A Brigand's Tale #1 and I love to squeeze it in to the story wherever possible. --- To go on a tangent, I am discovering (or is that re-discovering) that one of the fun things about making comics is these little things where the characters kind of write their own words. I feel like they just say, "Hey Dan, by the way, I'm just gonna say this right there..." and I'm like, " Sounds great, count me in!". --- In what is sure to be my only con attendance this year, I will be hanging with the Bolt Comics Team at their booth (Booth 4027) on Saturday the 17th June. Netflix series aside *Pluto* is a must read for aspiring comic creators. Urusawa's stuff is a masterclass in how to make comics. Though even if you aren't interested in making comics it's worth the price of admission just for the story. He is just really good at inching up the stakes a tiny bit at a time until all of a sudden the fate of the world is hanging in the balance. #### What's hitting this week? 1. Proud dad moments come at the most unexpected of times. This instance was one of those times... This is the exact transcript of a conversation I overheard this week from my two daughters. *Miss 10: How did Tite Kubo draw that so cool?* *Miss 8: What?* *Miss 10: Everything.* *Miss 8: He's Tite Kubo man...* If you have to ask who Tite Kubo is, maybe you should ask my 8 year old. I mean, he *IS* Tite Kubo, man. ### Yeh, I changed the format URL: https://www.tribetoons.com/join-me/ Last updated: 2024-03-04T09:07:57.000Z I know what your thinking, why is this guy redrawing a comic he published nearly a decade ago? Is he out of ideas? Great question. Here's the answer. It's taken me about 10 years of making comics to land on my actual art style. I can't remember who said it but they said "your style is the way you draw things wrong". I agree. Over the last 9 years I have drawn a lot less comic pages than I was intending to that's for sure. I think my lowest output was 5 pages in a whole year! #### More on this here... The consistency of the art was patchy and that created a negative feedback loop. I got downcast because from page to page stuff looked different. If I was looking at Bleach I would add scratchy lines like Tite Kubo did. If I was looking at TinTin I would add the sqiggly movement things like Herge. One thing about Tribe's in general is we are all perfectionists. I have spent way too much time mucking about with individual pixels no one will ever notice due to these tendencies. Perfectionists also tend to be procrastinators because if it's not perfect it should not be out in the world. But this is comics, and they are hard work, so at the end of the day, done > perfect. So yes, I want the relaunch of the title to have a more consistent look. The characters trade mark sayings and other eccentricities have also cemented over the years, and I wanted to include those from the beginning too. For a long time I would apply a lot of arbitrary rules when making comics. I realised that this rule applies equally in making comics as it does in a Dungeons & Dragons game. It's called the **rule of cool** and trumps all other rules. Wikitionary.org defines it thus: *Noun. rule of cool. The principle that anything is acceptable to do, use, wear etc. just as long as it is cool.* The coolness is more important than the methods used to get there. For example, why did I impose that every page needs to be drawn on an A3 sheet of paper? Nick Pitarra in his upcoming book Axe Weilder Jon, has drawn EVERY PANEL on 11 x 17 inch boards! I played around with this approach on some pages of The Castle Part 2, it is really fun, but a bugger to size right when collating the panels into a page on the computer. The TLDR is that now I use whatever page size works. Some pages have lots of stuff in them, so I draw that on A2(16.5 x 23.4 inches), most pages are just A4(8.3 x 11.7 inches) because inking A4 takes half the time of inking A3(17.5 x 16.5 inches) and gives me the illusion that I'm getting more done. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/14/e7/14e79763-9619-4f77-941d-c627d8954213/content/images/2023/04/PXL_20230426_213742493-min.jpg) A Sample of recent work using different paper sizes starting with A2 top left to A4 bottom right. This really helps give me the illusion of momentum as I feel I am getting more done. That's not the only format change though. The final product is gonna be more like the format of a manga book. So much smaller than regular comic size. This is a ruthlessly mercenary act as I try to use this to break into the 'book market' to increase the likelihood of library adoption of my work. Especially considering it is owned by Amazon. I use Amazon and Kmart as purchases of last resort, and can mostly succeed in this. It's a timely reminder to support small and independant businesses. Any preorders that were cancelled by book depository are now coming from my 'Local' comic book shop, only 2 point something hours drive away but it has strengthened my resolve to 'shop small'. 2. I'm enjoying the Vinland Saga anime on Netflix, and not to sound like "that guy" but the manga is way better. I am currently working away at what I like to call the anniversary edition of Trouble in Treelocke. The very first 'A Brigand's Tale' Book published under the [Bolt Comics](boltcomics.com) banner. I printed 200 copies and have managed to get at least 100 of these into peoples hands over the years. It represents to me the fun of just making comics. It was a bit of a team effort(I had a letterer, and my brother came in clutch right at the end with his mad Manga Studio skills.) I didn't really set any arbtirary rules of doing things that have accidentally crept in since then. Anyways, I'm doing a revised and expanded edition, including a big change in the format. It will also feature extra content, and not gloss over some of the world building aspects I had to skimp on to keep it to the original 24 page limit. That's the long way of saying I'm looking to relaunch the book and the series in 2024\. I'm currently 12 pages in and I'm happy so far with the results. Of all the artists I have collaborated with, he has been the easiset to work with by far. We see written scripts almost identically in our minds eye. It comes from years of poring over the same comics as kids, for literally years on end. I'm not joking. In the middle of a conversation, I could pipe up and say "Just. Like. Becky." and BOOM! he knows exactly what I'm talking about. There are about a thousand of these shared comic book moments either of us could reference and the other know about instantly.
